What is an expected family contribution (EFC)?

Updated October 18, 2022

The expected family contribution (EFC) is a number calculated by the Department of Education to determine the?amount your family is expected to contribute toward your education. Your EFC is not the amount of money your family will have to pay for college, nor is it the amount of federal student aid you will receive. Instead, the EFC helps the financial aid office determine your financial aid eligibility.
