Lecture/Lab Hours:
10
Lab Hours:
0

Course Description

Covers basic concepts of anatomy and physiology as they relate to emergency care, with emphasis on gross anatomy and normal body function. Explores the pathophysiology of common diseases and the likely patient presentations for each, connecting these concepts to sick and injured patients commonly encountered in the pre-hospital emergency environment.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of the human body.

2. Explain how the various organ systems are integrated.

3. Describe the relationships between pathophysiology and patient presentations for a variety of conditions.

4. Demonstrate appropriate application of the topics presented within the student's current EMS Scope of Practice.

Course Activities and Design

Objectives are met through integrated lecture and lab activities that allow for a gradual progression from simple to complex depth and comprehensive breadth of Human Anatomy & Physiology.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student mastery is evaluated by written quizzes, section examinations, and a final examination. Additional critical activities include case study review, small group sessions, and problem-based learning.
