Course Description

Introduces a variety of dances styles such as salsa, reggaetón, hip-hop, shuffle dance, line dance, afro beat, Bollywood, and other forms of dance. Covers both low and high intensity moves, warm ups, cool downs, and stretching. Promotes fitness at any level as dance moves can be modified for any fitness level.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: 

  1. Identify and perform specific aerobic activities for dance fitness.  
  2. Recognize different types of music from different genres and countries.
  3. Identify and analyze the importance of health and safety while performing activity- based movements.
  4. Demonstrate proper form and technique while using correct footwork and movements in a progressive sequence. 
  5. Identify the lifelong benefits of aerobic fitness.  

Course Activities and Design

*Continued improvement of overall physical conditioning through Dance Fitness participation, including but not limited to improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle fitness, balance, agility and flexibility
*Perform safe and effective Dance fitness exercises
*Identify different rhythms, step patterns and the techniques associated with those rhythms

• Pre/post fitness testing
• Individual fitness programs

• Practice safe and effective warm-ups and cool-downs
• Intensity monitoring via target heart rate, Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE), and talk test methods
• Components of fitness-related physical fitness and their benefits for lifelong fitness
• Principles of exercise training
• Safety concepts for group fitness exercises (exercises, environment, equipment, progression)
• Personal fitness assessment
• Goal-setting for fitness
• Personal fitness program design
• Modify exercises and activities for varying physical conditions and individual fitness level
• Body mechanics – proper body alignment
• Explore the relationship of the Mind-Body connection in fitness
